Occupation: Nurse Practitioner
What are your professional interests/specialities?
I work in a GP practice, so I need to employ a diverse skill set as a generalist. I have a special interest in Neurodevelopmental disorders in adults and paediatrics. I also have a background in child, maternal and community health and working in regional and remote areas has given me a wealth of experience in Aboriginal health. I’m still passionate about the Ottawa charter and the delivery of equitable healthcare.
Tell us, where you are from and how did you get to be a Nurse Practitioner in the Midwest-Gascoyne region?
I’m originally from Perth. When I returned from working in London I was at a bit of a loose end. I secured a locum contract at Carnarvon Hospital which was for 6 weeks, and I ended up there for 7 years! When I moved to Geraldton, I was fortunate to find a nurturing and supportive GP practice which values skill extension and professional development, so it was a natural progression to complete my masters degree.
What do you love about the Midwest-Gascoyne?
What’s not to love? I love being able to pick and choose which pristine beach to visit, the amazing contrasts of the sky and landscapes, perfect weather, the friendly hub of Geraldton cafes and boutiques, the Abrolhos Islands, fresh seafood, rich indigenous culture, wildflower season and so many unique places to visit to get away from it all. Geraldton still feels like a big, friendly country town.
Did you always want to be a Nurse Practitioner?
No, I originally wanted to be a forensic scientist. The pathway at the time was a convoluted one so I decided to invest in a Bachelor of science.
What are your passions?
I love swimming, snorkelling, fishing, camping, and gardening. I also love a new cooking challenge.
When you aren’t working, where will we find you?
Relaxing in serenity at home, swimming or walking at any one of our beautiful beaches, cheering on my kids at sport or camping at some of our hidden treasures (Monkey Mia is my happy place)
